5 Things to Think About Before Installing a Home CCTV System

Thinking about installing CCTV at home? Here are five important things to consider before you go ahead, from camera placement to data protection.

Thinking about installing CCTV at home? Good call. A visible camera system is one of the best deterrents against burglary, and it gives you peace of mind when you’re at work or away.

But before you rush in, here are five things worth thinking about first.

1. Where do you actually need cameras?

Most people go straight to “I want cameras everywhere” but that’s not always necessary. The key positions are:

  • Front door and driveway (where most break-ins start)
  • Back garden or rear access points
  • Side gates or passages
  • Garage or outbuildings

We’ll survey your property and recommend the positions that give you the best coverage without unnecessary cameras.

2. Wired or wireless?

Both have their place. Wired systems are more reliable and don’t rely on your WiFi signal, but they need cable runs. Wireless systems are easier to install but can drop out if your WiFi is patchy. For most home installations, a wired system gives you the best long-term reliability.

3. Resolution matters

A camera is only useful if you can actually identify who’s on the footage. We install HD and 4K systems that give you crystal-clear images, day and night. Night vision quality varies massively between cameras, so don’t just go for the cheapest option.

4. Remote viewing

Most modern CCTV systems let you view your cameras live from your phone. You can check in when you’re at work, get alerts when motion is detected, and scroll back through recorded footage. We set all of this up for you during installation.

5. Data protection

Yes, even at home, you need to be aware of data protection rules if your cameras cover any public areas (like a pavement or your neighbour’s property). You should display signage letting people know they’re being recorded and have a legitimate reason for the coverage.
