Do I Need a Fire Alarm System for My Business?
If you run a business, you have a legal responsibility to protect people from fire. Find out what type of fire alarm system your premises needs.
If you run a business, you have a legal responsibility to protect the people in your building from fire. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts the duty on the “responsible person” (usually the business owner or employer) to carry out a fire risk assessment and put appropriate measures in place.
For most commercial premises, that means a fire alarm system.
What type of system do you need?
That depends on your building, what it’s used for and how many people are in it. There are different grades and categories of fire alarm system under BS 5839, ranging from basic manual systems to fully automatic addressable systems.
- Grade A: A full commercial fire alarm system with a central control panel, manual call points, detectors throughout, and sounders. Required for most commercial buildings.
- Grade D: Mains-powered smoke alarms with battery backup. Common in HMOs and residential.
- Grade F: Battery-powered smoke alarms. Minimum for domestic properties.
What we install
- Conventional systems for smaller premises
- Addressable systems for larger or multi-zone buildings
- Combined systems that integrate with your security setup
Maintenance matters
Having a system installed is only half the story. Fire alarm systems need regular servicing to stay reliable and compliant. We recommend a minimum of two services per year, with weekly testing of call points.
We offer ongoing maintenance contracts that cover routine servicing, emergency call-outs and system updates.
